APPIATSE TOWNSHIP PROJECT RECONSTRUCTION INAUGURATED IN GHANA

The Appiatse community in the Western Region of Ghana celebrated a significant milestone with the inauguration of the reconstructed Appiatse Township, a project initiated following a tragic explosion in the area. The event, graced by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was held under the patronage of the Appiatse Fund, the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation team, and the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.

The disaster occurred when a motorbike rider collided with a truck transporting explosives, resulting in a devastating explosion that claimed the lives of thirteen individuals and injured several others. In response, the Appiatse Support Fund was established to provide assistance to the victims and to spearhead the reconstruction efforts.

Chaired by Rev. Dr. Joyce R. Aryee, the Appiatse Support Fund mobilized resources for the reconstruction project. Additionally, the Appiatse Reconstruction Implementation Team (ARIT), led by Mr. Benito Owusu-Bio, was tasked with overseeing the rebuilding process.

During the inauguration ceremony, Vice President Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the collective efforts of all stakeholders in restoring hope to the people of Appiatse. He commended the resilience of the government, led by President Nana Akufo-Addo, in addressing the aftermath of the disaster. Notably, President Akufo-Addo directed that $5 million of the $6 million fine imposed on Maxam be allocated to support the reconstruction efforts.

Dr. Bawumia expressed gratitude for the completion of the project, emphasizing the importance of preventing similar incidents in the future. He recognized Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, for his leadership in ensuring the successful completion of the project.

The Appiatse Redevelopment Project, which commenced in September 2022, was divided into three phases, involving the construction of a total of 244 housing units. The project aimed to provide permanent housing for the residents of Appiatse and restore the community’s vibrancy.

In conclusion, the reconstruction of Appiatse Township symbolizes resilience, unity, and hope in the face of adversity. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering commitment, the community has embarked on a journey of healing and renewal.
